November 17, 2022

CrossFit

The 2023 Rulebook has been released and registration for the Open is live. Here’s what you need to know.

The 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Open has started, but it’s not too late to register! Registration will be open until Monday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. PT when the scores for 23.1 are due.

No matter your fitness level, the Open is for everyone. This is an all-inclusive worldwide event that brings together CrossFit athletes from around the globe to test their fitness and experience the magic of the CrossFit community.

There are several reasons why athletes participate in the Open — maybe it’s for the competition, or because they value representing themselves, their affiliate, region, or profession on the leaderboard. Maybe it’s as simple as the pride they feel by being a part of something they truly believe in.

So why should you register? We hope you use the 2023 Open to fuel your competitive fire. We all give more of ourselves in the presence of others, and the Open is an opportunity to test your fitness against your affiliate friends, your region, or even athletes from a different country, and rep your flag on the worldwide leaderboard.

More importantly, the Open is an opportunity to challenge yourself. Registering for the Open gives you a chance to set a goal, make a commitment, and see it through. The efficacy of the CrossFit program comes down to accountability for some of us and the courage to share our scores with each other on the whiteboard at our gym or leaderboard for our worldwide community. If this sounds like you, you can use the Open to push harder in your workouts and test how much your fitness has progressed in the last year.

For athletes wishing to advance in the 2023 season, the Open is the first stage and will determine who moves on to the Quarterfinals.

If you’ve never tried CrossFit, training for the Open is a great place to start. And whether you are striving to become the Fittest on Earth, want to challenge yourself and set a fitness goal, or enjoy the fun of a community event with your friends at your gym, the Open is for you. Register now.

Congrats! You’ve registered for the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games Open. Now what?

Become familiar with the Open test format, score submissions, leaderboard rankings, and more by reading the 2023 Rulebook

Athletes who wish to advance in the season must have a judge score each of their workouts for submissions to be accepted. All judges and affiliate owners who need to validate their members’ scores must pass the 2023 Judges Course. The course provides an overview of the knowledge and skills used during competition, including movement standards, common faults, and repetition counting, so taking the course will be of value to all Open participants, regardless of whether you plan on judging.

Start sharing your excitement with your community. Get your friends and family to join in the fun. Tag the CrossFit Games in videos and photos of you preparing for the 2023 Open on social media. Find a CrossFit affiliate if you don’t yet have a box to call home (trust us, the Open experience is better at an affiliate). The 2023 Rulebook

The 2023 Rulebook is your guide to everything related to the 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games season. It breaks down the rules and important information for each stage of competition: The Open, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the CrossFit Games.

The Rulebook will help guide you through the Open registration process by breaking down division eligibility, how to register, establishing competitive regions, and registration terms and conditions. You can also find more information about the different versions of each test that will best meet your fitness ability: Rx’d, scaled, and foundations.

Here is some noteworthy information about Open registration from the Rulebook:

General

  • 1.02 — Athlete Eligibility: Any athlete meeting CrossFit’s age and eligibility requirements may register to compete in the Open. Any athlete wishing to participate in the Open must complete the registration process in time to be eligible to compete in the first Open test of the season.
  • Age requirements: Athletes must be at least 13 years old at the time they create an account on the CrossFit Games website and must be 14 years old as of July 14, 2023.
  • 1.08 — Region Selection: During the registration process, athletes will provide information to establish their competitive region for the Open. Athletes will remain assigned to this region throughout the competition season. Citizenship at the close of the first Open score submission window is the primary requirement used to determine an athlete’s competitive region.
  • 1.10 — Divisions: An athlete’s competitive division will automatically be assigned based on birthdate and gender, unless the athlete selects an adaptive division during registration. For non-adaptive athletes, the athlete’s age as of July 14, 2023, will determine which division the athlete will compete in during the 2023 season. There are 36 total divisions for individual competitors, and there is one division for teams:
    • Individual (Men and Women)
    • Age Groups (Men and Women ages: 14-15, 16-17, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59. 60-64, 65+)
    • Adaptive (Men and Women: Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, Multi Extremity, Vision, Short Stature, Seated With Hip Function, Seated Without Hip Function, Intellectual)
    • Team
  • 1.29 — Scaled and Foundations: The prescribed (Rx’d) Open tests released for each applicable division (i.e., Individual Men and Women and all age-group divisions) may be accompanied by scaled or foundations versions. Athletes who are unable to perform a test as prescribed may choose the scaled or foundations version provided. Athletes also may finish the Open by completing any combination of tests (prescribed, scaled, or foundations).

Teams

  • 1.12 — Teams in the Open: Any licensed CrossFit affiliate gym in good standing with CrossFit may register a team for the team competition. Teams will consist of at least two individual men and two individual women who validly register for the Open. “Individual” athletes are non-adaptive athletes between the ages of 16-54 who do the same variations of the tests. Athletes may only compete for one team during each CrossFit Games season.
  • 1.13 — Open Registration — Teams: Any athlete wishing to register a team or compete as part of a team must first register as an individual athlete. The athlete who registers the team will be designated as the team manager for the competition season. Team managers will create a team, pay the registration fee, and select athletes to join the team through their CrossFit Account Competition Dashboard. Athletes can also join their affiliate’s team from their own Competition Dashboard.

Adaptive

  • 1.11 — Adaptive Registration: There are 16 divisions* for adaptive athletes. Any athlete wishing to compete in an adaptive division will be able to select their division as part of the registration process. There are no age-division cutoff dates in the adaptive divisions, but competitors must be at least 14 years old as of July 14, 2023. For the adaptive divisions, athletes must submit the Adaptive Competition and register into the division that best represents their ability. Athletes registering in an adaptive division must:
    • Have a permanent impairment from the list of ten (10) eligible impairments; and
    • Meet the minimum impairment criteria (MIC) for one of the eligible impairments; and
    • Meet the requirements of competition for one of the 16 adaptive divisions (eight men’s and eight women’s divisions).
  • NOTE: The Adaptive Eligibility forms will be available on Thursday, Dec. 1. Adaptive athletes can still register before Dec. 1 and will be instructed to fill out the eligibility form when it becomes available.
